Cancel The Astronauts - Funny For A Girl

If there was an award for Most Witty And Exquisitely Named Band and I was asked to hand out said award, I would with no doubt choose Edinburgh’s Cancel The Astronauts.

Sadly, such award doesn’t exist, or at least not yet, but that shouldn’t prevent you in any way to listen to the music done by this 5-piece. Their previous EP was the extremely enjoyable I Am The President Of Your Fanclub (And Last Night I Followed You Home), and with a name like that, you know you just can’t go wrong. Delicious indie-pop for all demographics are at the order of the day, and once again so with their latest effort.

The canceled astronauts return with a new EP titled Funny For A Girl where, again, they bring their savoir-faire of charming yet twisted pop songs. It’s more of the same, and I mean it in the best possible way. As soon as you start listening to the EP, you’ll recognise who is it by listening to the first track, Funny For A Girl, where more of that easy-listening is displayed. The power of Cancel The Astronauts is to attract the hipster kids along with the dad dancers, no one gets left out with the familiar tracks served by the group, who still manage to be that little edgy and different and hip and whatever else.

With this EP, however, comes a wee surprise. Once you reach Standing Still, you will find a rather different atmosphere as the band slightly deviates into post-rock territory with some fine and delicate guitars and lulling vocals, it makes you hope they would consider creating a side-project as post-rockers.

Seeing how their first EP is free to download from their Bandcamp and Funny For A Girl can be yours for the price of 3 quid, it would be rather silly not to throw yourself into their spaceship and let the astronauts take you wherever it is they please to go.
