Mixtape #02 | Argos Sobs

Some might argue that February is the month of love and would therefore expect a mixtape filled with corny songs about love. Well, sorry to disappoint.

The second mixtape of the year is titled Argos Sobs, a collection of 10 tracks that will question your manliness. Whether it’s the music, the voice, the instrument or the lyrics, all of these songs possess the ability to put us in a melancholic mood. You might shed a few tears because of the staggering lyrics or for the beauty of the sound of a piano masterfully played - whatever the reason, this mixtape is meant to do just that.

Below you can find the tracklist with a couple of words describing each track - when you’re ready, scroll down to the bottom of the post to listen to the mixtape. Enjoy!

Antony and the Johnsons - Another World
indie / chamber pop
The powerful voice of Antony Hegarty coupled with the heart-braking lyrics make for an explosive cocktail. Handle with care.

The Irrepressibles - In This Shirt
chamber pop
Not many know of The Irrepressibles but don’t doubt for a second that In This Shirt was one of the best tracks of 2010. Intimate and powerful, it’s simply gorgeous.

Owen Pallett - E is for Estranged
indie / chamber pop / neoclassical
Canadian Owen Pallett is more known for his quirky lyrics but he knows how to get serious from time to time, as is the case with this song. Beautiful string arrangements and a very sad story.

Yasushi Yoshida - Staircase
neoclassical
No words are spoken here, and yet… it never fails to transport me to another world. A real gem.

Sigur Rós - Starálfur
post-rock / ambient
Perhaps the most mainstream track of the mixtape, the lyrics in Icelandic will not stop you for a minute to admire its sheer beauty. Icy as their homeland.

Broken Records - A Promise
indie / folk
If there is a song that has the power of making me cry, it has to be this one. Amazing vocals, wonderful music and depressing lyrics. Perfect in its own way.

Nico Muhly - Honest Music
neoclassical
Again, words are not always necessary to evoke emotions, and Nico Muhly does this incredibly well with a powerful play with stunning string arrangements.

Sparklehorse - Apple Bed
indie
How could someone who wrote a song like this one commit suicide? All I know is that life tastes sweeter upon hearing this track.

Jónsi & Alex - Happiness
ambient
Masters of ambient music Jónsi & Alex take things to a whole new level with this track. It truly changed my life.

There Will Be Fireworks - Colombian Fireworks
post rock
Who says a sad song can’t be loud? Here is an example that will get you in tears from the very first second.
