The Son(s) - The Son(s)

The Son(s) were three men in a band, in Edinburgh.
One Son went to London, and made his fortune in the movies.
Another Son went to Oxford and lives in a small commune there.
The last Son eventually went back to the North East of Scotland to write and record these songs.

In a world of Gagas and Biebers, you simply can’t help but feel surprised when a new name arises but does all he can to keep his identity and anything that surrounds his musical project as dark as possible. I have known the Son for a bit now, which would make you think that by now I should be able to tell you a few things about who are/is The Son(s) and where they come from, but truth is, no one really knows. All we have to hang on to are those lines you read at the beginning, written by the Son himself. What I can tell you though, is how good their self-titled debut album is.

It all starts with a little great track called Dogs, Boys & Men. While it may not exactly be representative of the whole album, it just kicks off things in the best possible way. It’s also a rather smart thing to do, placing this track at the very beginning, as anyone who will pick this record up in a store and decide to give it a quick listen, you can rest assured that after hearing the initial 5 seconds, that person will exit the shop with the record in hand.

The album marches on with an incredible flow that is most definitely a rare find these days. It sounds sophisticated, mature, classic yet modern, gorgeous. You’ll be blown away by tracks like You Belong To No One, soft-spoken and rendered majestic by the presence of violins, it has that glamour of the 60’s and a maturity that can be only granted by the passing of time. Are we sure this is a brand new record?

Wait, because it gets even better. You will fall in love with Sold Down The River, a track soft as a fluffy cloud gently blown by that delightful smoky voice. The piano, simply brilliant, and then those choruses with that voice, it just belongs to a different era, to better times.

The Son(s) manage to impress even with Soheyho, the shortest track on the record clocking in at a mere 1:22 minutes, it doesn’t need a second more to boast its simplicity and geniality.

Oh, but the way it ends. Things reach an end with Mars Just Plied Her With Gin…, a majestic modern ballad that will make you fall in love again and again. And again. And again. It’s only a song, but it smells of whisky and girls’ perfume, it feels like the gentle evening breeze of a coastal town, it tastes achingly sweet. No, it’s hardly just a song. It’s an instant classic.

This might be a debut album but in reality, this is simply the record that many bands wish to make one day.

The Son(s) will release their debut album on 7 March through Olive Grove Records. CDs will be in limited editions so you will want to get yours as soon as you can.

Keeping up with the music industry, one track at a time.
