Tanera Heights - Cannons and Drums

Some bands seem to have the secret to making songs that are incredibly infectious since the first time you hear them. They possess originality, they avoid all the overused clichés of pop music but still sound familiar, like we were just waiting for them to appear in our playlist.

Meet Tanera Heights, a band that fits the description perfectly. Originally from North Inverness and now with one foot in Edinburgh and the other in Glasgow, this trio got together last October and are already prepared to launch their debut EP, titled Cannons and Drums.

Comprising three tracks, the EP is kick-started by My Fictional Fortress, a track that starts with a fury reminiscent of something between These New Puritans and Shy Child. However, it quickly forgets that comparison and evolves into a rougher rock sound, with hair-raising choruses and power guitar riffs.

Next up is Endgame, the definite highlight of the EP. Extremely energetic and highly addictive, this is one to play on a loop. It might be the sound-scape created by the guitars, or those electronic bits that appear now and then which adds an amazing volume to the track, it just sounds like a perfect track from start to end.

After two tracks that will definitely bring you to a very good mood, the lads from Tanera Heights decide to end things in a rather dark tone. Illustrations of Time is a dark, slow-paced track where the main protagonists are now the piano and obscure lyrics, it’s worlds apart from the other two tracks but it still manages to keep that slight familiarity and quality that by now should be definite trademarks of the Strathpeffer lads.

Cannons and Drums will be released on February 7 and you will be able to watch them perform live at King Tuts on February 11. Word of advice? Don’t miss it.
