Bentonite is a highly expanded mineral clay named after the first commercially available bentonite mine, located in Fort Benton, Wyoming, USA.


 


The geological formation of bentonite is the remains of volcanic ash, dating back to the Cretaceous and even the Jurassic age, the era of nautilus and dinosaurs. In nature, montmorillonite, with the formation of weathering media, these cations are usually calcium, sodium or magnesium.


 


    The montmorillonite has the chemical formula (Na, Ca) 0.33 (Al1.67Mg0.33) Si4O10 (OH) 2.nH2O.


 


    The physical structure of montmorillonite can be seen as the lamellar polymerization. Each individual sheet has an extended surface with a length of between 0.2 and 2 microns and a thickness between 6 and 10 angstroms. In fact, the crystal-like morphology and type of polymerization can vary greatly depending on the source of the montmorillonite and the location of the mining site.
